11.7 Clinician Availability

Having clinicians available for urgent visits is also a critical factor in the ongoing success of a geriatric practice that visits assisted living facilities. The key to making this work is to focus on geography when it comes to looking at how the clinicians spend their time. Pairing specific assisted living facilities with local nursing homes allows for a clinician to break away from routine visits in a nursing facility and urgently visit a patient in a nearby assisted living facility.

Today, with the growth of pure house call practices, there has been an appropriate move into assisted living facilities by such practices. One of the problems that they run into is not having the hub of a clinic-based practice, although advancing technology may help with this. The other problem with pure house call practices is the limited ability to provide urgent visits, especially when the practice is relatively small. This is the main reason that we have historically picked up patients from house call practices that were unable to provide the type of availability that facilities will appreciate from a robust geriatric practice.
